Rule 5 Draft Reminder

#1 Post by Wind Dancers »

With the Rule 5 draft a few sims away, I thought it would be helpful to go over the schedule leading up to it and how to prepare for it.

1. The Draft
The draft will take place during offseason sim #12 (May 30th in real life). The list of players in the draft becomes available after sim #11 (5/28) which when we all make our lists in-game. Once the list is published during sim #11, rosters are locked and there can be no more moving of players to the 40man roster, with one small exception. If you sign a free agent during sim #11, he will automatically be placed in your DFA's. Unfortunately, this also places him in the rule 5 draft pool. Recently signed free agents are the only players that you may add to your 40-man before sim #12.
General schedule:
- Sim #10 (5/25), Winter Meetings, Post CP Rewards before Sim #16
- The time between sim #10 and #11 is your last chance to protect players from the rule 5 draft.
- Sim #11 (5/28), Rule 5 Draft Pool published.
- The time between Sim #11 and #12, Create Rule 5 draft lists in-game, DO NOT add any players to the 40-man unless you JUST signed them from free agency).
- Sim #12 (5/30) Rule 5 draft is processed.

2. Viewing Rule 5 eligible players.
OOTP does have a list of your players that are Rule 5 eligible, it just takes a bit of extra work to find it.
- Go to your "Front Office" screen which shows an overview of all of your finances.
- Each block on that screen can be changed to show different information by clicking the drop-down arrow in the top right of the block.
- Click that dropdown and select "Rule 5 Eligible Players" and there you go!
Here is a GIF finding and selecting that block: https://i.gyazo.com/abd3b6bb7089320d963 ... 537acf.mp4

Thanks Dylan!

I also want to point out this nugget discovered in the Constitution that will help alleviate the issue:
Constitution wrote:There is a trade freeze during this sim cycle.
As a result, any trade made post-Winter Meetings will be held and processed at the end of the Rule 5 Draft sim, to prevent the kind of confusion Dylan points out. Since we will have just had the Winter Meetings, I suspect the number of post-meeting trades will be minimal. But keep in mind, players acquired in a Winter Meeting trade may be on your DFA (especially those with Major League Contracts) - so you will want to clear the DFA, post-meetings, ASAP so that you do not lose a player.

Guys please remember to check the player is actually Rule 5 eligible. The game sometimes gets.... well confused. A player must have 4 years of pro service is signed 19 or older and 5 years if signed 18 and older.

Sure does. London's 1st round pick in 2028 is listed as Rule 5 eligible in game, despite a total of 106 days as a professional to date.

This is because, for some reason, he signed a contract after the draft and was immediately released. So Mike re-added him but that game saw that as him being a free agent which would make him eligible for the Rule 5. You are correct, he is NOT available to be drafted in the rule 5 draft.

The game makes any player with less than the appropriate time served, who has changed teams, Rule 5 eligible. That makes this almost impossible to control. Aside from looking and doing the math, a good general rule is, if he's under 22, he's probably not technically eligible...

So should we try to avoid putting these types of guys on our draft lists? Or will the powers that be control for all those ineligible players that show up in game as eligible for our lists?

I believe we will try to get a list posted of guys you should try to avoid.

As others pointed out in Slack, there are a few players in the Rule 5 draft pool that are NOT allowed to be drafted:

RP Ramon Contreras (CST) - Signed last sim
SP Michael Provost (FAR) - Signed last sim
C Yong-kook Ch'oe (HAV) - Signed last sim
RP Dave Coley (CST) - Signed last sim
2B Louis Kossan (NO) - Result of a bug
SP Duane Moss (LON) - Result of a bug

If any of these guys are drafted, they will be returned immediately, so don't waste your picks.
