Neat Stuff, Post-Sim Thread: 2028, Season 22

Since the trade deadline:

In the IL, Scottish and Havana have 21 wins, Kentucky has 20. Those are the three best teams in the league and the only significant move for any of them was the Don Mercer trade.

In the SL, you have Aurora and Shin Seiki who've got 19 and 20 wins, respectively. On the other end you've got Yuma and Kalamazoo who've been terrible. EVERYONE else is within 3 games of each other over this time span.

Today's Stat of the Day in StatsLab is consecutive 90 RBI seasons. Only 9 players have had streaks of 6 or more consecutive seasons, and some of the bigger names, like Rob Raines, aren't among them. Despite having 9 seasons with 90 RBI, the longest consecutive streak he had was 3 years.

Among active streaks, Alex Bothwell is on the list with 5 and currently sits at 74 RBI. So he needs 16 to crack the list this year. However, he's hitting just .220 since getting traded to Bakersfield and the team has a .270 OBP on the year. No one has scored more than 60 runs yet. Even before the trade, Bothwell only had one month this year where he had 16 or more RBI. Ironically, that was May, when he hit .226.

Danny Burton is the other active streak longer than 3, having already got to 90 RBI this year and he now sits at 4 straight seasons. Harley Schneider made it to 3 this year. Mike Britt, James Heard, and Jose Luna all sit at 3 seasons, with Britt and his 77 RBI being the only player of the three with a chance at getting to 90.

The 90 RBI streak is interesting. I would have thought that Andres Hernandez would have been on that list for sure.

It turns out that he would have had a streak of 7 years, if he had managed to get one more measly RBI in 2026 (he wound up with 89).

Some quick Neat and Not So Neats:

- the curse of Japan continues, as a 2-4 week against Okinawa (1-2) and Neo-Tokyo (1-2) puts the Borealis in a position of praying that they only have one series left - Toyama, with a Japanese team. Not So...
- Part of that was Bartolo Esquivel's worst start in his 6 GS for Aurora - 5 IP, 5 R v.NT...
- Meanwhile Bob Burns, in 14.1 IP has allowed only 1 run (in his second outing out of eleven), with 8 H, 1 BB and 20 K - NEAT!
- Continuing on the trade front, Derrick Dwyer is hitting .305, with 7-2B, 2 HR and 19 RS. His 4 E have not necessarily improved the defense, although, it feels like he's getting to more balls, so that's a plus!! Neat!!
- Aurora's second selection in this years draft, Stewart Arundale, was promoted to AA for the final week of the GNL season - after solid starts at both S A and A, and he was 8-27 (.296), with Gatineau and Brampton needing a tie-breaker game to decide the division/wild card team. That's Neat-O...

Happy to see Garry Charron earn the SL Player of the week, and happier that he shared that 5-hit game with David Morrisson, with 5 hits of his own. Good (comparative) August for Duluth and glad that some players stepped up to fill the Mercer vacuum. I Hope Henry Carter can keep his momentum--he deserves a good finish this year.

On the Triple Crown watch, we don't have anyone likely to pull this off among hitters. Andres Hernandez is leading the SL in home runs and RBI, but his .280 average is only 11th.

However, on the pitching side, Havana's Enrique Vazquez is currently leading in all three of ERA, wins, and strikeouts.

ERA is rather ridiculous right now. Vazquez is at 1.89. The next closest players are West Viriginia's Oniji Yokoyama and San Antonio's Richard Neely, both of whom are at 2.48. That's nearly 0.60 different!

In terms of strikeouts, Vazquez's 194 K's are 29 better than London's Martin Ramirez. You can envision a world in which Vazquez blows up and his ERA goes way south. Yes, he'd have to give up something like 5 runs per start over 5, 4 inning starts to get worse than a 2.48 ERA, but he'd still be adding K's. To lose the K lead, Ramirez would need to strike out over 10 batters per start the rest of the way, assuming Vazquez keeps roughly to his current pace.

Wins is the closest category, with his 15 wins being just one better than Scottish's Soichiro Ogawa. A couple of bad breaks along the way and this is the most likely place here Vazquez might get caught. You can expect them to both get 4 or 5 more starts... probably 4 so they can be rested for the postseason.

One thing you're probably wondering is if this is a big deal or not... we've had some great players who've surely won a triple crown before. On the hitting side, you might be surprised to learn we've never had a PEBA triple crown winner. On the pitching side, there are three players who've done it. Take a guess who they are and how many times each before checking the spoiler tag!

Conan McCullough, Markus Hancock, and Manuel Corona. No Provost!
What surprised me was that these are the only guys who've done it and they only each did it once, in 2007, 2011, and 2014 respectively.
McCullough had a 1.28 ERA with 23 wins and 254 K's in 2009 and ONLY led in ERA.
It's been 14 years since we've had one.

One neat thing in SS - long time Eva star Ryozo Takeuchi made his 2028 SS debut after roster expansion. Even better, he hit a HR - increasing the SS career record mark to 346HR. Ryozo is one of my all time favorites and it's a treat to see him deliver in Eva blue again.

I'm hoping he can squeeze out another 4 HR to make it an even 350 and eke out another 0.3 WAR to take his career mark in SS to 25 (6th place all-time).

Orlando Trujillo was one of 3 SP rookies this year, sent to AAA after a bad month due to roster constraints. Was thrilled to see him tear up AAA and even happier to see him return to PEBA with a 6-0 shutout of the #1 team in the GL.

Completely agree. We need fast exports from remaining teams and higher frequency simming.

The last thing we want to do is lower engagement for most of the league and risk losing GM's.

James Heard is currently sitting at 999 career RBI.
He would become only the 20th player in PEBA history to record 1000+ RBI.

Some great name on that list! What strikes me is if 'Big Whiskey' should play beyond his current contract, he should be able to end up number 3 on that list!

Congrats to Heard! The gap between #2 an #3 on that list is HUGE.

Everyone on the list of 1000 RBI men has at least 30 WAR... with the exception of Ricardo Longoria. He's got 19.5. Heard is at 26.5.

Heard is 7th on the list of guys with 950+ RBI in terms of RBI per season. He's at 90.8. Morimoto is the only player over 100 RBI per year.

I was not familiar with Morimoto. He was an RBI machine. Wow. This got me wondering how former Battousai/Eva/Leone RF Morihiro 'Homu-Ran' Nakamura performed and I see "Homu-Ran' put up 1226 RBI (29 of which were in PEBA) and to go along with Frank's point "Homu-Ran' had a 61.1 WAR (-2.4 in PEBA)
