That’s libel! I am instructing Yuma’s lawyers to file suit against you in civil court. We will be asking for $1 million in damages. But we would settle out of court for a third round draft pick.
How about we give you Motoki Suzuki ? He's worth $31.9 million! and he's a 1st round draft pick. You won't get a better deal than that.

Sure. I'll take Suzuki off your hands ($31 million), you take Colin Crow off mine ($12 million) and you throw in your second round draft pick to compensate for the differential in salaries. I'll even throw in a year's supply of Colorado River Water. You game?

Latest Mushy vs. Flores vs. Acevez update:

Mushy: Mark Ray seems to have found his stride. After three so-so starts (14 IP, 15 H, 8 ER, 8 BB, 8 Ks), Ray has started to show the talent that made him the third overall pick in the 2024 draft: 3 starts, 18 IP, 10 H, 1 ER, 5 BB, 10 K.

Flores: Still in a 7th inning role, Flores has been used relatively sparingly in the last week, going 1 & 2/3 scoreless innings in mop-up duty in a loss at Aurora, and giving up 2 hits and an earned run in two-thirds of an inning in a 3-0 loss at Palm Springs. He's dominating righties (130/167/174) and getting crushed by lefties (385/467/692). He will likely stay up, as the Longshoremen linger on the peripheries of wild card race (6 GB of the Bears), but he may be moved back down the bullpen pecking order.

Acevez: Acevez got a cup of coffee that saw him make three road starts, getting shelled in his debut at Toyama (4 IP, 7 ER in a 10-4 loss), pitching well enough to get a 6-4 win at Aurora (6 IP, 4 ER, 2 BB, 2 K), and controlling the Codgers in a 4-3 win at Palm Springs (7 IP, 3 H, 2 ER, 1 BB, 2 K). So the Longshoremen go 2-1 in his starts, give staff ace Jose Santos a needed break, and give Acevez a taste of the big leagues that saw him improve with every start.

As far as trade acquisitions go, it's not been great. Emilio Manuel hit 167/306/267 in 10 games before spraining an ankle that will cost him the next 3-4 weeks. With the trade of Dmitri Hill and the release of Hector Marroquin, that leaves the Longshoremen dangerously thin at the upper levels of the minors on the middle and left sides of the infield. Indeed, to stave off fatigue, RF Jorge Flores and C Noriyuki Sugahara will each take a turn at 3B in the upcoming series against division leader Fargo. SS Roberto Salazar and 3B Ian Reid are both starting to show signs of a heavy workload.

On the pitching front, Phil Burns has three unscored upon appearances since coming over from Duluth, Javier Jimenez has a save and an ugly 9.53 ERA in 7 appearances since coming over from K'zoo, and prodigal son/former closer/franchise leader in saves Julian Olivares has 5 mediocre appearances after returning to Canton. :(

Tonight's sim is a big one, as the Longshoremen face the team that they are chasing in the division (Fargo) and the team that they are chasing in the wild card (Bakersfield).

Disappointing sim for the Bears, who went 2-4 against the Akira after losing the final game in extra innings. Bears closer Nakagawa blew his 3rd save of the season, losing a 2-run lead off 3 BBs and 2 hits. Trusted set-up man Bob O'Higgins then gave up the walk-off homerun to Akira DH Reynoso on a first pitch cutter that was planted into the right field stands. A dramatic comeback win for the Akira which gave them the edge and prevented an even split between the two wildcard hopefuls.

The Bears bounced back nicely this week, going 4-2 and winning each series 2-1. The new heart of the Bakersfield offense continues to thump as the deadly combination of Merlin and Red Hookonce again terrorized opposing pitching, slashing .263/.300/1.037 and .292/.370/1.079, respectively. The Bears other trade acquisition, OF Stephen Hooper, continues to struggle in his new role. He's slashed a paltry .172/.243/.446, including going 2 for his last 22 ABs with 10 Ks, since being part of the trade deadline deal that saw him and Merlin swapped for picks and prospects. Bears manager Wayne Kedsch expressed no concern about Hooper's recent struggles but was non-committal about keeping him in the outfield. His role in Crystal Lake was predominantly DH.

28-year-old SP Fred Womack pitched yet another gem during his career year, posting a gamescore of 78 over 7.1IP and giving up only four hits, no walks, no runs, and striking out 8. He's already doubled his career WAR so far this season, accruing 3.6 WAR over 24 starts. Setup man Hideaki Hara had a terrible outing against the Longshoremen, giving up 3 ER and allowing an inherited runner to score, as the Bears saw their 4-1 lead in the bottom of the 8th turn into a 5-4 loss. Hara was charged with a blown save, which is the Bears' 3rd in the last two weeks. The Bears' late inning bullpen trust has now each blown a save over that time period. The Bears will have to hope those outings were outliers and not a sign of what's to come down the stretch.

I assume everyone noticed we had the second no-hitter of the season this past sim. I won’t post details, in case the GM’s of the two teams want do so, but seemed a shame to let it pass unacknowledged ... box score is here.

Hamish didn’t write about it in the division roundup because it was in that “other” league...

Shame we don't have track of consecutive steal streaks. Jack Speed has 36 without being caught this year, a streak that probably stretches into last season where he was 31 of 34. Alfredo Torres of Kentucky is also 28 for 28 this year. I looked up the major league record and only six have had streaks longer than 36, Vince Coleman holding the record at 50.

Well... at the risk of jinxing him, Manny 'Fido' Castro has 35 straight without being caught - in his career (3-seasons) - thats 35 for 35... and... he's a catcher...

He was 23 for 23 his rookie season, then we had a managerial change and the new guy just doesn't like the steal as much as I would like, and Castro was/is 6 for 6 last/this year...

Ray posted an update on the Borealis on his blog, so lets look at the Neat and Not So from Aurora's farm...

AAA Thornton
These guys suck. Their .347 winning percentage is by far the worse in the parent franchise's system history. For a team that has won 5 GBB titles and played in 19 playoffs - and 17 in a row, the decline here is the biggest Not So Neat in Aurora-dom. And, oddly, that includes losing Provost before the year could work up a sweat. Qualifying for a Neat, is Jesus Negron, who's 4-12 record is more the result of his team's failures than his. He's posted a 3.18 ERA with 107 K in 141 IP. His 50 BB is the real drawback to his performance. Not So Neat on the mound has to go to Aurora's latest enigmatic player: Rob Imhoff. Injury after injury has dropped him off the major league roster in favor of consistency and reliability. His 4.05 ERA isn't the teams worse, but 30 runs allowed and 12 HRs in 66.2 IP masked the 77 K he's amassed. His poor play may relate to his inability to maintain his health and the club's plans to leave him at AAA, for now, until he can prove to be more durable.

At the plate, when the top three averages on the team belong to a Major League demotee, a minor league free-agent signed in July, and a guy with 400 AB at AA this year, one gets the sense that there are no Neat. Did we mention this is the worst team? Not So Neat? Maybe we talk about Arthur Bonsai, with 11 HR, but his .203 smell's of Not So Neat... Oh... we have plenty of candidates, but how about Ken Cantwell (.175, despite 10 HR) and Jorge Diaz (.196, and at 29, looking at what are likely his last ABs in his Aurora career).

AA Gatineau
The Polar Opposite of Thornton is the Balloonists. At 77-56, they are tied with Brampton (CL) for the Maple Leaf lead - with both virtually guaranteed a playoff spot. After 16 straight playoff appearances to begin the Great Northern League history, this will be Gatineau's 2nd playoff berth in 6 seasons. The real oddity of the previous 17 playoff appearances is: Zero titles. That's Zero as in ZERO. Perhaps the top Neat moment on the mound is the efforts of Volmer van de Loo who posted a 1.73 ERA in 8 starts at SLRC, and in 14 AA starts has posted a 1.43, with a combined 118 K in 133 IP. He's given up just 7 HR in those 22 starts. Also impressive on the mound is Bob Cummins, with a 12-8 record and a 2.24 ERA in 26 GS. He's got 100 K and only 18 BB, while holding opponents to a .206 AVE. The Not So Neat goes to Raul Garcia - who has split time with AAA, but his 24 AA innings (17 appearances) with 18 K, 17 BB and 6 HRs perplexes - especially with a .156 BABIP.

3B Jorge Soto is the Neat winner so far, with an edging towards Not So .243 average, but he's hit 23 HRs, has 68 RBI and has a .814 OPS. On the Not So Neat side, Jon Branch continues to frustrate, as a breakout 2027 is well in the past, and the present is all about .176. That said, Albert Craster's .186 isn't exactly week old sardines...

A San Luis Rio Colorado
The Rapidos Blancos arena going anywhere, but they haven't been all that bad - despite being in 2nd and 30! games behind ridiculous 84-27 Rosarito (WV). The starting pitching for SLRC has been solid and Andres Canales (7-10, 1.69) has led from the start. He's keep the ball in the park (2 HR in 154 IP) and teams are hitting .181 against. Considering the efforts of Henry Cluett, that's saying a lot for Andres. Cluett has been a bit of a roller coaster, but he has 6 shut out efforts and 5, 1-run games to his record. As the top piece in the deal that sent 'Fudd' Martinez to Toyama, Cluett hasn't disappointed.

Antonio Vega gets the nod at the plate, despite his 15 AA game effort. in 93 AB at SLRC, he's hitting .290 with a .888 OPS. Also with split time is Aurora's 2nd pick of this years draft, Stewart Arundale, who hit .273 at Mokule'ia and is at .299 at SLRC over 87 AB. There are a few Not So Neat candidates, but this will go to Tomas Mateo, hitting .173 in 249 AB - though his 10-for-10 on steals is a modicum of Neatness.

Short A Mokule'ia
The Oceanic sit just a game and a half out of first in the Aloha division, and equally so in the wild card race, though there are still 23 games to go. Another piece of the trade with Toyama, Pedro Morales, is a Neat point at Short A. He's 4-1 with a 2.15 ERA, with 75 K and 26 BB in 62.2 IP. He's had three straight 6 inning, shut out efforts of late. 2028 12th round selection Scott Ferguson has posted a 1.59 ERA over 18 relief appearances, with 33 K in 28 IP. Not So Neat is a rough one, as Chris Lowe (4.26 in 12.2 IP) and James Ostrander (5.68 in 6.1 IP) don't have much of a data basis for such a title.

Ramon Vela gets the Neat nod, with a .258 average, 4 HR and 9-10 on SB. This is Ramon's second professional season after spending time at the IC. He hit .276 last year with 4 homers as well. 2028 4th round pick, Gary Dyer is hitting .243, but also with 4 homers and a .708 OPS. Not So Neat goes to 19-year old Antonio Pena, who is struggling at .145 in 152 AB.

As a follow-up, this morning, Aurora made the decision to promote Arundale to AA, and will start the final 7 games on Gatineau's schedule. Should he perform well, he'll stick around for the playoffs, and success there could mean moving up to AAA for the remainder (if any) of the season. Aurora's scouts (as mentioned at the draft) look at Stewart's current development v. potential very much like Pedro Ferringo, who likewise fast-tracked (pun only slightly intentional) his way through the minors. A spring invite looks likely...

Th desert sighed, the coyotes sighed, the tumbleweed sighed, the Colorado River sighed, the entire ecosystem of the Mojave Desert gave up a huge sigh of relief. That sigh reached the tiny town of Yuma, Arizona on the morning of August 26, 2028 and the old men in the local coffee shop sighed too. The mayor sighed, the town drunk sighed, the police chief nearly giggled with relief. "Ah," said Dozer manager David Goode, "ain't it a wonder!" He drank a toast to his team. The clubhouse manager sighed the sigh of relief and said, "Things'll be back to normal 'round here now."

"Winning," the resident shrink said, "is a great psychological burden. It creates such unreal expectations. Losing is a relief, a release from pressure, a sign that all is right with the universe."

The entire PEBAverse sighed when the news was made public. Yuma was upholding its end of a long and distinguished tradition. The Yuma Bulldozers have been mathematically eliminated.
