Reams of paper, is it all worth it?

#1 Post by Fishermen »

Hal Mossisey was sat in his office with his finance director, And reams of paper. Everywhere his finance director went there always seemed to be reams of paper. He didn’t use modern things like computers or tablets or smartphones. He used paper, reams of it, everywhere he went he carted boxes of files, calculation jottings and red inked balance sheets.
Hal wasn’t smiling, Hal didn’t smile a lot these days. Ever since his GM left to be Commissioner of the PEBA life had been hard. He’d had to GM the team and own it, that was hard, hard and time consuming. He’d tried to get a new GM but there didn’t seem to be any out there. It wasn’t just Marseille though. He’d spoken to several of the owners and there just wasn’t any good Gms out there or so it seemed. Even teams that had found a GM recently weren’t overly happy with the new incumbents.
God why did he pick Marseille ? The city was full of Frenchmen, stinking. If it wasn’t garlic it was onions and if it wasn’t onions it was fish. And they all yabbered away in French, all day long. Why couldn’t they speak American like any other sane people. If they weren’t out on those gaudy fishing boats of theirs they were sat in the harbour bars drinking some awful concoction called Pernod, by the bottle.
The finance director woke him out of his daydream. He did stopped droning on and was now banging a pointer on a series of figures scrawled all over a white board on the wall. Hal tried to tune in to what the point was he was trying to make. Money bored him, mainly because he had loads and didn’t need to concern himself with it, after all what was the finance director’s job?
The finance director was working himself up to a right lather. Fishermen’s profit of just six and a half million in 2023 was the first profit since 2019, inbetween the franchise had lost $35 million. Not a staggering amount but over the lifetime of the franchise he had pocketed a million dollars overall. The finance director was doing his damnedest to point out that for all his investment over 17 years he should have more than a million and one PEC ring to show for all his hard work.
Hard work? Yes it was hard now, actually doing the work in the GM’s office. He was back in his daydream, he had heard what that dreadful stuck-up woman in Rio Grande was trying to do. Chucking the franchise back at the PEBA Board wasn’t going to save her from the bailiffs, how on earth had she lost £153 million? Meanwhile perhaps he could chuck the million profit at the Board and they might take this rubbish off his hands instead? The finance director might actually have a point for the change, was it really worth all the hassle for such small change?

Fish is often sold wrapped in paper. Perhaps that will be helpful. :-B
